The Command
Follow Jesus
“And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he rose and followed him.” (Mark 2:14)
What It Means
This is an ordinary exchange with an extraordinary result. Jesus sees Levi sitting at his tax booth in the middle of a workday, and he speaks to him. Most of us go past the people we work with without a second thought, but Jesus doesn’t overlook anyone because of where they are. Levi’s side is just as striking: the verse records no questions and no conditions, only “he rose and followed him.”
Try It Today
Start the day by asking Jesus, “What does following you look like today?” Then look at where you are right now, at work, at home, or in the car, and ask what it would mean to get up and follow him from there. Do the first thing that comes to mind.
Tonight’s Prayer
Jesus, thank you for calling me right where I am. Show me where you’re leading, and give me the willingness to get up and follow. Amen.
