This November prepare for Thanksgiving with daily thankful prompts. Picture this: it’s Thanksgiving, and you’re seated around a table filled with food and family. As tradition calls, each person takes turns sharing what they’re thankful for. Now, imagine you’re second to last—let the nerves begin! While some people seem naturally comfortable expressing gratitude, others, especially when put on the spot, may feel a bit awkward or tongue-tied. Maybe you even think to yourself, “I’ll be grateful when this exercise is over!”

Gratitude is such a familiar concept that it’s easy to overlook its depth. For many of us, daily prayers or moments of thanks are routine—but routines can turn meaningful expressions into something mechanical. Many of us choose safe answers. If you think about it, for children, being “thankful” is sometimes a way to control behavior. They may hear, “You should be thankful for what you have,” when they beg for something new. Or the time-old mantra of “you should be grateful for dinner, there are starving kids in Africa.” Gratitude shouldn’t be a lesson in comparison. Instead it should be taught to be an invitation to reflect on happiness, peace, self-love and the kindness around us.

Phrasing questions as “What made you happy today?” or “What do you like about yourself?” helps kids—and adults—move beyond “obligatory” gratitude and explore what truly brings us joy and appreciation.
